h is for hieroglyphic—Detail
Oil on Canvas, 91 x 91 cm
This oil painting, like the other works in my series “Scripted” (sub series “Re:Cursive”), shows the repetition of a letter and the resulting patterns. Original alphabets were pictographs. In that sense my art series is situated within an ancient tradition. It is not, however, a homage or dead repetition. Rather, it subversively re-animates the ancient codes to enable precise and incisive comment on current cultural dilemmas.
The letter of this artwork is ‘h’. The word for h could only be “hieroglyph”—that most potent cultural referent for pictorial languages. It is, like my own work, a rebus (“not by words but by things”) that hints at the satirical possibilities in the borderlands between word and image.
