Western Swamp Tortoise Drawing in Progress
This is a hommage to the conservation biologist who established a rescue project for the Western Swamp Tortoise. This species – only occuring in the area of Perth – was on the brink of extinction with only 70 animals left in 1988. Now the breeding at Perth Zoo is so successful that about 30 young Swamp Tortoises can be released into nature reserves. The conservation biologist is my husband Gerald Kuchling. He is still the supervisor of this project.
